Which treatment is right for what you came in with?

Most people arrive knowing the symptom, not the modality, and our acupuncture services are grouped by what they treat rather than by tradition. That is normal — picking between acupuncture, cupping, tui na and herbs is our job, not yours, and the first visit exists partly to make that call. Still, it helps to know roughly what each one does best before you book.

  • Sharp, localised or nerve-related pain — acupuncture first. Back, neck, sciatica, migraine and knee pain are where the evidence base is strongest.
  • Broad, stubborn muscular tightness across the back and shoulders — cupping, often added onto a needling session rather than booked alone.
  • Tissue that needs to be worked open before needles will reach it — tui na, our Chinese medical massage, for 20–30 minutes ahead of the needling.
  • Internal patterns that move slowly — digestion, cycles, sleep, recurrent infections — Chinese herbal medicine, usually over 8–12 weeks.
  • Skin tone, fine lines and facial tension — Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture, run as a 10-session course over 5 weeks.

What does a first visit actually involve?

A first appointment is longer than the ones that follow, because most of it is diagnosis. Nothing here is a surprise, and you can stop at any point.

  1. Intake, 15–20 minutes. Your symptom history, what you have already tried, current medications and supplements, sleep, digestion and stress load.
  2. TCM diagnosis. Tongue and pulse, plus palpation of the area that hurts — this is what turns a symptom into a treatable pattern.
  3. The plan, said out loud. How many visits we expect, roughly what each will involve, and what would tell us acupuncture is not the right tool for you.
  4. Treatment, 30–60 minutes depending on the service. Needles typically stay in for 20–30 minutes, and most people fall asleep.
  5. Aftercare. What to expect over the next 48 hours, what to avoid, and when to come back.

How many sessions before you know if it is working?

Acute problems usually need 3–6 visits over 2–4 weeks. Chronic patterns generally run weekly for 6–8 weeks before we taper. Migraine prevention is a 6–8 week course; perimenopausal sleep patterns often need 8–12 sessions; internal herbal formulas for long-standing skin conditions typically need 8–12 weeks.

We will not sell you a twelve-pack before we have seen how you respond. After the first one or two visits we will tell you honestly whether this looks like the right tool — and if it is not, where you should go instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which service should I book if I am not sure?

Book general acupuncture and say what is bothering you when you call. The first visit includes a full TCM diagnosis, and we will move you to cupping, tui na or herbs if that suits your pattern better. You are not locked into whatever you clicked.

Do you take insurance?

Medicare covers up to 12 acupuncture sessions per year for chronic low back pain. Other plans vary widely — bring your card and we will check your specific coverage before you commit to a course.

How long is a typical session?

First visits run 60–75 minutes because most of that time is diagnosis. Follow-ups are 45–60 minutes for most services, 20–25 minutes for ear acupuncture, and 30–90 minutes for massage depending on what you book.

Do you speak Chinese?

Yes. Both practitioners work in English and Mandarin, and this whole site has a Chinese version. Say which you prefer when you book and we will schedule accordingly.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are far thinner than injection needles — most people feel a brief dull heaviness at the point rather than sharp pain, and many fall asleep during the 20–30 minutes of needle retention. Tell us immediately if anything is genuinely uncomfortable.
